Best First Apartment Essentials:
Kitchen
You’re going to need to buy the most for your kitchen, so keep that in mind with the budget
1. Dinnerware set – buying a dinnerware set is so much more convenient (and less expensive) that buying individual dishes and it has everything you’ll need.
2. Pots and pans set – pots and pans are an absolute must! Even if you don’t plan on doing a lot of cooking, you’re still going to need the basics. Non-stick is always the way to go (will make cooking and cleanup afterwards so much easier!).
3. Oven mitts – a staple in every kitchen. You want them to be good quality, but you also don’t need to spend a lot of money on these.
4. Toaster / Air Fryer – depending on how much cooking you plan on doing, you might want a toaster like this one that also doubles as an air fryer. Think toaster oven, but can turn into an air fryer whenever you want. 😉
But if you want something super simple that doesn’t take up much space, works well, and just does the bare minimum, and is SUPER affordable, this toaster will get the job done.
5. Cutting board – you only need one or two good-quality cutting boards to last you. Try to get ones that aren’t plastic (better for you, the environment, and will last a lot longer).
Just make sure to wash your cutting board super well, especially if you’re using the same one for everything (raw meats, raw fish, vegetables, fruit, etc.)
6. Blender – A blender is super helpful to have on hand, and it can serve so many purposes. Juices, smoothies, sauces, etc.
This is definitely something you don’t have to right away, so if you’re not sure how much you’re going to use this, just wait and think about it.
7. Silverware – If you want your apartment to be aesthetic (duh!), match your silverware finish with the accents in your apartment. This is a good basic set that has all of the different color options depending on what the aesthetic of your apartment is.
8. Drinking glasses – Drinking glasses don’t have to be super boring. Get a set that looks cute and gets the job done. This set looks like it’s from Anthropologie, just without the price tag. 🤭
9. Measuring cups and spoons – You’re going to need these for baking and cooking. Get a set like this one that’s simple, but has everything you need. I can already smell the cookies!
10. Mixing bowls – This set has lasted me for years, and it has a nice grip on the bottom so it doesn’t fly all over the counter when you’re using them haha. This set also comes with lids and all the sizes you could need.
The key to more affordable shopping for your apartment is buying items in sets, not just individual pieces.
11. Tupperware set – You’re going to want these for leftovers and/or meal prep. If you aren’t meal prepping already, this is a great way to save time during the week.
It’s so nice not to have to worry about what you’re going to eat 24/7 when it’s already made and ready to go!
12. Cookie sheets
– These are great, not only for cookies, but for making quick and easy dinners. Here is my favorite recipe for sheet pan chicken (the quickest and easiest meal you’ll ever make).
13. Strainer – For washing fruit and veggies, and straining pasta. Definitely worth buying a metal or steel strainer, since plastic is just going to melt with hot water and little pieces of plastic will get into your food (eww!).
14. Chip clips – Because you have to keep your snacks fresh! These ones will actually last and won’t break on you like a lot of other ones.
15. Bar stools – These bar stools look like they’re from Pottery Barn. They’re actually so stinking cute, and a really good price for a set of three!
16. Knife set – It’s worth it to spend a little extra money on this because bad quality knifes are just going to leave you frustrated and won’t last!
17. Tea kettle – If you don’t use this for tea (where are all of my tea gals at?) you’re going to want to use it for hot coco, top ramen, and Mac and cheese on those nights when you need a quick and easy meal or snack to tide you over. No shame!
18. Dish soap – This dish soap comes in a pack of three (so it’ll last you a while) and this brand is clean, unlike a lot of other dish soaps.
19. Sponges – The only dish sponges you will ever need! They work so well and won’t end up smelling. This is on my kitchen essentials repurchase list. I’ve seriously never gone back after using these sponges.
20. Trash can
– You’re going to want something with a lid, or else it’s going to start stinking up your kitchen! And as weird as it sounds to spend money on a trash can, it’s worth it so you don’t have to replace it every year (the cheaper ones break super easily).
21. Paper towel holder – This one will match with the hardware in your kitchen. Who knew a paper towel could be so aesthetic?
22. Salt and pepper shakers – Electric salt and pepper shakers are such a nice to have! These look ones look chic, so you can leave them out on the counter. 😉
23. Dish towels – You’re going to have to replace your dish towels every once in a while (or they will get a mildew smell), so you don’t want to spend too much money on these.
I keep going back to these ones since they’re super absorbent!
24. Can opener – Everyone needs a trusty can opener in their kitchen. It’s one of the kitchen essentials you’ll use the most.
Living Room
1. Couch
– This couch is the perfect size for a lot of apartments – not too big and not too small. It also is super cushy and cozy, but the price tag is so affordable!
2. TV – Even I was surprised how much me and my roommates used the TV. Between movie nights, and just having a show on in the background while we did homework, it’s going to be, hands down, one of your most used apartment essentials.
3. Media stand – In an apartment, you don’t want to hang your TV on the wall because it will make too many holes in the wall that you’ll have to deal with when you move out. You also get extra storage with a media stand (you can never have too much storage!).
4. Frames – These ones are super affordable but are super simple and clean! Great for framing photos and artwork for your apartment! If you have a Michael’s or Hobby Lobby by your apartment, they have good discount options as well.
5. Curtain rod – This one is simple but also looks good and comes in different finishes depending on what you’re looking for.
6. Curtains – These are good basic curtains that won’t break the bank and will look good in any room.
7. Throw pillows – Throw pillows aren’t a must! But I will say, your couch will look kind of naked without them haha. These throw pillows are cute and neutral, so you won’t get tired of them.
8. Blankets – You only need one or two good blankets in your apartment! I know it’s tempting to buy a ton of blankets, but save your money.
9. Rug – Make sure you get a rug that’s washable! You’re going to want to be able to throw it in the washer machines when spills happen – because they will.
Bathroom
1. Plunger and toilet brush
– This is a two-in-one that gets the job done. It also comes with it’s own stand so you don’t have to worry about the awkward storage.
2. Shower curtain and rings – A good basic shower that comes in a ton of different colors that you can match with your apartment.
3. Bath mat – A memory foam bath mat feels so luxurious! This one also dries super fast so you don’t have to worry about stepping on a soaking wet bath mat after your roommate.
4. Shower organizer – The reality is, your shower isn’t going to have enough storage for even the shower basics. But definitely get something that’s adhesive and able to take down so it’s not a pain in the butt when you move out.
5. Trash can – You’re also going to want this trash can to have a lid. It just looks cleaner and keeps everything contained so you don’t have to look at it.
6. Bath towels – These bath towels are the comfiest! You’ll seriously never want to use a different bath towels again.
7. Soap – Buying a bigger bottle of soap that you can refill a dispenser with is so much more affordable and will last you a lot longer!
8. Soap Dispenser – A good inexpensive option that will match your bathroom, no matter the color scheme or theme.
Bedroom
– If you’re buying curtains for your apartment, make sure they’re blackout! Nothing is worse than waking up because the sun wants you to (the sun doesn’t care if you want to sleep in or not lol).
2. Pillows – When it comes to things like pillows, it’s 100% worth it to spend a little extra money. After all, you’re going to be spending a lot of time in your bed, so you want it to be comfortable.
– No matter what type of mattress you have, a mattress topper can easily make your bed 100x more cozy! A memory foam mattress is definitely the way to go!
This is the same kind I got for my dorm (and I recommend to all college students and anyone moving into an apartment) because of how plush it is!
4. Bed frame – This is a good simple bed frame that will look good in any bedroom. You don’t need to spend a ton of money to get a cute bed frame!
5. Mattress – One of the best affordable options for a memory foam mattress. This is one of those items where the reviews speak for themselves.
6. Bed sheets – You don’t need more than one or two pairs of sheets. Anything more is a little overkill. Again, bed sheets are one of those things that it’s worth it to spend a little extra money on. You want them to be good quality, and you want them to last.
7. Duvet insert – The perfect in-between duvet insert that’s still fluffy and cozy, but not too thick to where you’re sweating during the summer.
8. Duvet cover – It’s always better to opt for something that’s a good basic color so you don’t get tired of it or have to buy a different one if you decide to switch up your style.
10. Blanket – This is by far the best blanket to exist! I know, that’s a high title. But trust me on this one. It feels exactly like a barefoot dreams blanket, but it’s a fraction of the price. You’ll never want to snuggle with a different blanket!
11. Throw pillow inserts – These throw pillow inserts are actually good. They’ll fill out the pillow cover and make your decorative billows look fluffy.
12. Nightstand(s) – Look for a nightstand that has some storage. You’re going to want a drawer or two to keep your essentials.
13. Floor length mirror – You’re going to want a full-length mirror somewhere in your apartment. How else are you supposed to do outfit checks?
14. Dresser (optional) – You don’t need a dresser, but if you have the space, it’s definitely nice to have. Your closet probably isn’t going to have enough space for all of your clothes.
Cleaning
1. Mop or Swiffer – This Swiffer will make your life so much easier when it comes to cleaning your apartment! And for the days you don’t have enough time to do a deep clean, go over your floors with this and they’ll be good until you have enough time for a full clean.
2. Vacuum – You’re going to have to bite the bullet on this one. I know, just another thing to spend money on.
But if you get a good-quality one (I’ve had this vacuum for almost four years now!) it will last you. You get what you pay for when it comes to vacuums.
3. All purpose cleaner – You really don’t need 10 different cleaners. One good multi-purpose cleaner is all you need to keep the surfaces in your apartment clean!
4. Microfibre cloths – Microfibre cloths are a game changer for cleaning baseboards and any surface that gathers dust. Ditch the paper towels, microfibre cloths do a much better job and will keep your apartment cleaner for longer.
– The one and only glass cleaner you’ll need for all of the windows, mirrors, and glass surfaces in your apartment.
6. Laundry detergent – Try to find a laundry detergent that’s clean and doesn’t have any harsh chemicals. It’s better for you, and the environment.
7. Vinegar – Vinegar is one of the best ingredients for a clean apartment! It’s seriously so good for cleaning so many different things.
If you want to know how to use it to make your apartment sparkly clean, check out this post on 31 genius apartment cleaning hacks that no one tells you about.
8. Dishwasher pods – You’ll want something that’s clean and actually works. I use these ones and love them (a good clean brand that actually works well).
Basic Supplies
1. Extension cord – Between all of your electronics, gadgets, and different lights, you’re going to need more outlets than your apartment has to offer!
2. Tool kit – Even if you’re not very handy (same!) it’s good to have a toolkit around for simple apartment maintenance and decorating.
3. Flashlight – It’s always good to have a flash light on hand, just in case! Keep this one in an easy-to-access drawer (I keep mine in my junk drawer).
4. First aid – It’s always better to be safe than sorry! Keep this one under your kitchen sink for emergencies.
5. Batteries – This is something a lot of people forget about (including myself) but is definitely something you want to keep handy.
– Every renters favorite solution for keeping holes out of the walls! You’re going to be surprised how many command strips you go through living in an apartment (hint: it’s a lot).
7. Scissors
– Hear me out, kitchen scissors work SO MUCH better than regular scissors. I have a separate pair of kitchen scissors that I use for non-kitchen items. You can thank me later. 🙂
8. Step stool – For those tops shelfs and reach the top of your closet, you’re going to want a step stool. Even if you’re tall, you’re probably going to need one.
First Apartment Must-Haves
1. Key hooks – This is so nice to keep by your door to keep all of your keys, hats, and essentials organized. That way, you can just grab your keys on the way out instead of searching around the apartment for them.
2. Veggie chopper – Quite possible one of the best kitchen purchases I made for my apartment. And it’s under $25! This gadget will be your best friend for prepping and chopping veggies.
3. Pre-cut parchment paper – Saves so much time! You can cut these sheets in half for smaller baking trays, otherwise they’re the perfect size for your standard cookie sheet.
4. Door security bar – For all of my gals, this is an apartment must! It’ll give you peace of mind and it’s just a good precaution to take to keep you extra safe. You can never be too careful!
5. Air purifier – It can get stuffy in your apartment. And if you have allergies, an air purifier will save you! It’s like a breath of fresh air, literally.
6. Door mat – You don’t need one for outside your apartment, but it’s definitely good to have one right when you walk in the door so you’re not tracking dirt around your apartment.
First Apartment Essentials Buying Tips
1. Set a Budget, Then Break it Down by Room: Moving into an apartment can get pretty pricey. It’s always good to go into moving into your first apartment with a clear budget. And STICK TO IT!
Making a budget is a waste of time if you don’t actually use it. I know it might be tempting to go all out and make your first apartment look like your Pinterest boards, but resist the temptation!
If you need a little help in this department, you can download the free apartment budget printable I made below for just such occasions! 😉
Start With Absolute Musts: A good way to keep yourself from spending a ton of money all at once is to only buy the essentials, and wait on other items.
No need to rush, take your time decorating and adding the details. This will give you more time to think it through and find items that best fit your apartment.
Don’t Buy Everything Before You Move-In: You don’t want to buy everything before even moving in!
It’s going to be a lot more work and you’re probably going to have a lot of items you thought would work, but don’t fit well in the space or how you thought they would.
Think Function First, Aesthetic Second: I know how tempting it is to buy the most aesthetically-appealing items for your apartment without giving a second thought to how functional these items actually are.
But if you’re going primarily based off of looks, you’re going to end up with a pretty apartment that’s not actually good for living in.
Choose Items With Multiple Purposes: Between working with a smaller space and trying to save money, finding items that serve multiple purposes is going to be your best bet!
Items like storage ottomans and a dish rack that also doubles as a drying mat will help you make the most out of your space without it feeling overcrowded.
Check What You Already Have: Moving into your first apartment, you’re probably not going to have a ton. But ask you parents or friends if they have any items they no longer use that they can give you for your first apartment.
And if you have a roommate, double check and communicate what each of you is buying. For most items, you don’t need to buy duplicates of things that are in the common living areas (living room, kitchen, etc.)
Invest in Comfort (Where You Spend the Most Time): If you’re going to invest in anything, invest in items that you know you’ll spend the most time using, or areas of your apartment you know you’ll be spending the majority of your time (e.g. your bed and living room).
