I also thought it was worth mentioning that I found this set on Amazon with a ton of the non-negotiable dorm essentials you’re going to need to buy anyways. You can’t really go wrong with neutrals, and it’ll save you a little bit of time and money compared to buying each piece individually.
If I’m being honest, I wish something like this was an option when I was going into my freshman year of college.
Sleep and Bedding Essentials (Non-Negotiable):
2. Memory Foam Mattress Topper
If you could only bring one item to the dorms with you, I would recommend bringing a mattress pad, preferably one made with memory foam.
As much as I wish I could say that mattresses in the college dorms are comfy, they’re just not. There is no cushiness in those mattresses.
So trust me when I say that a memory foam mattress pad will be your best friend. I mean college students usually don’t get much sleep as it is so you want to make sure what sleep you do get is quality and comfortable.
This is the mattress pad I got for my freshman year in the dorms and I couldn’t imagine sleeping on those beds without one.
3. Mattress Protector
Having a mattress protector isn’t really a big deal if you don’t plan on getting a mattress topper. But if you do, you want to make sure you have something in between your mattress pad and the sheets. Something that will keep your mattress topper from moving around too much.
Just make sure whatever mattress protector you get is waterproof!
4. Comforter Set
I’m normally a duvet girl, but in the dorms, taking a duvet cover off, cleaning it, and putting it back on just seemed like too much of a hassle. And buying a separate duvet insert and duvet cover when I could just buy a comforter set didn’t make a whole lot of sense to me. Comforter sets are just a lot more budget-friendly and easy to manage in the dorms.
5. Twin XL Sheet Set
These sheets are SO good! First and most importantly, they’re super comfortable. Then they also have a pocket on the side for your phone, and you can get twin-XL extra deep so it covers the mattress and the mattress pad. They’re pretty perfect for the dorms. And the side pocket will come in handy, trust me!
6. Sleeping Pillows
Sleeping pillows are a must. They don’t have to be anything fancy, but make sure they’re comfortable enough to sleep on for the foreseeable future. Pillows are one of those things that can automatically ruin your sleep, even if your mattress is super comfortable. So if you invest in any part of your bedding, your pillows are your best bet.
7. Cozy Throw Blanket
You’re going to want at least one good throw blanket for your dorm. Whether you get cold at night and need that extra layer to keep you warm or just want something to cozy up with while doing homework in bed (inevitable) or or bingeing Netflix haha, you will use a throw non-stop.

8. Bedside Caddy

Otherwise, I feel like little lamps like this one are just so much cuter! This one is also dimmable, which is really nice when you want to stay up and your roommate wants to go to sleep.
Bathroom and Hygiene Essentials:
10. Shower Caddy
Lugging all of your shower items back and forth from the community baths is such a pain! These caddies can quite literally hold ALL of your shower essentials (and then some). You would be surprised at how much this caddy can hold!
This is something that everyone has in the dorms. It’s just another way to make your life easier. Plus you can hang it from the shower hooks so you don’t have to put all of your stuff on the dirty ground.
11. Shower Shoes
A lot of people forget to bring shower shoes but they are SO IMPORTANT! I know you might be thinking that I am exaggerating, but when you think about the fact that everyone is showering in the same stalls in a community bath (think about all of the germs), it will make you want to order some shower shoes.
The dorm bathrooms are the last place you want to walk around barefoot.
12. Towel (2 Sets)
I recommend getting two bath towels. It just makes it easier to switch between two, just in case one of your towels is in the washer when you want to shower. It’s also good for when one of your friends stays the night and wants to take a shower. I only got one towel for the dorms, and later on I bought another because I was regretting my decision.
I’ve also seen people with this bath towel robe. And even though it might be good to have an extra towel just in case, this one makes it so that you don’t have to worry about accidentally flashing people coming out of the bathroom. 🫣
13. Hair Towel Wrap
If you don’t already have a hair turban, they are seriously game changers! They make drying your hair so much easier and less time consuming. They’re also super helpful for getting your wet hair out of your face when you are trying to get ready.
14. Hair Tools/Products
Hair tools can take up a ton of room! So before I went off to college I treated myself to the Shark Flexstyle. My logic was that it would save me room and I wouldn’t have to lug 5 different individual hair tools to college when I could just have one. And I think it was pretty darn worth it. Years later and it’s still the only hair tool I use!
This is also a great thing to ask for as a grad gift if you don’t want to buy it for yourself. Otherwise, I would choose one or two hair tools that you use most and just bring those.
Laundry and Cleaning Essentials
15. Laundry Hamper or Backpack
More likely than not the laundry room is not going to be right next to your dorm room, so having an easy way to transport your laundry will be such a lifesaver!
A lot of people will bring laundry backpacks or bags but when you have a lot of laundry to do you are not going to want to drag it across the hall and possibly up a flight of stairs (speaking from personal experience).
Getting a laundry bag that you can throw over your shoulder or wear as a backpack will be a saving grace!
16. Laundry Detergent Pods
Whatever laundry detergent you get, make sure you get pods! A lot of colleges don’t have a spot for you to put liquid laundry detergent, and it’s just a lot less messy when you can throw a pod in with all of your clothes and call it a day.
17. Mesh Laundry Bags
I swear dorm laundry machines eat your socks. I can’t explain it, but you’ll come back to your dorm with your clean clothes and you’ll be missing a sock or two.
Mesh laundry bags are nice because they help you keep all of your smaller items and intimates together so they don’t get lost or torn in the washer.
18. Stain Remover Stick
Don’t forget a stain stick! This will come in handy a lot more than you think. Between random spills and nights out, this is a laundry staple that you definitely don’t want to forget.
19. Disinfecting Wipes
It’s good to have a pack or two of disinfecting wipes to quickly wipe down surfaces and clean up messes. Even if you think you’re someone who will keep their dorm extremely clean, when you really don’t feel like it, going in with one of these wipes is better than nothing!
I would also buy these before you move into your dorm. You’re going to want to wipe down the dorm furniture with them to make sure everything is as clean as possible before unpacking.
20. Paper Towels
This is definately a personal preference, but about half way through the school year I got tired of continuously buying paper towels and going through them pretty quickly, so I bought a pack of these reusable paper towels. You can just throw them in the wash when they’re dirty – and they’re good as new.
21. Trash Bags
You’re going to want to line your dorm trash with bags. That way if anything spills, you don’t have to wash out the actual can. It also just makes it easier (and less smelly) to take out the trash.
22. Mini Vacuum or Handheld Vacuum
I don’t really think a big vacuum is necessary for the dorms. And to be honest, you probably wouldn’t have enough room to store it anyways. So a handheld vacuum will allow you to clean up those crumbs and keep your dorm floor clean enough. 😉
23. Air Freshener or Room Spray
Sometimes the dorms can get a little stale. It’s nice to have some sort of room spray that will make your dorm smell as clean as it looks. A clean, subtle scent goes a long way!
Food & Kitchen Basics:
24. Mini Fridge (If Not Provided)
This is definitely something you’re going to want to check before you move into your dorm. And if your dorm doesn’t come with a mini fridge, then you will definitely want to get one. Even if you can’t cook in the dorms, it’s good for storing snacks, drinks, and maybe a microwavable meal or two.
My dorm came with a fridge, but I still bought another one because my roommate and I needed more space than our dorm one provided us. And of course I had to get the pink Frigidaire one haha.
25. Microwave
Same thing goes for a microwave. A lot of dorm rooms have this included already, but you definitely want to check to make sure this is the case. After a night out, nothing is better than some top ramen or microwavable Mac and cheese haha.
26. Insulated Water Bottle
Make sure you have a big water bottle for the dorms. A lot of dorms will have a filtered water refill station somewhere in the lobby or halls, so it’s nice to have a big bottle that you don’t have to fill up 20 times throughout the day.
27. Utensil Set
Make sure you have at least one utensil set! There are going to be times where you bring food back to the dorm or would rather have a microwavable meal – and you’re going to need one good set (at least).
28. Dish Soap and Sponge
These are pretty self explanatory. You probably won’t need these a ton, but you’ll definitely want them handy to clean out your coffee mugs, wash your utensil set, and give your water bottle a good scrub.
School & Tech Essentials:
29. Noise Canceling Headphones
Noise canceling headphones are a college holy grail! I seriously don’t know how you make it through college without a pair – especially freshman year. It’s hard to get quiet time away from your roommate(s) in the dorm, so you kind of have to create your own haha.
Investing in a good pair of noise canceling headphones is one of the best decisions you could make!
30. Extension Cord
There is almost never enough places to plug in all of the electronics you will bring with you to college, so an extension cord will be your best friend! You also just never know where an outlet is going to be in the dorms, and they don’t tend to be in the most convenient places (like behind your dorm bed or a big piece of furniture 🤦♀️).
31. Desk Lamp With Charging Ports
Some dorms have desk lamps, and others don’t. So this is another thing to add to the list that you want to check before move-in. But if you do have to get your own lamp, make sure it has some sort of charging port – because you’re going to need them!
And even though aesthetic lamps are fun, make sure it’s actually practical and will give you enough light to study with.

The space under your dorm bed is going to be where you store most of your stuff! Yes, probably even more than your closet. You would be surprised how much can fit under a dorm bed when you have the right organizers (spoiler alert – it’s a lot!).

This organizer is great because you can put it under your bed or in your closet. And it really doesn’t take up a lot of space! But it’s a great way to maximize storage and give yourself another option to put your clothes, school supplies, or even makeup and hair tools.
You can also kind of customize this piece to fit your space – which is always nice when you don’t know what the layout off your dorm will look like until you move in.
35. Desk Hutch
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again – you can never have too much storage space in your dorm! This desk hutch is a great addition to any desk to maximize your storage space and make use of the vertical space above your desk.
I bought one very similar to this white desk hutch for my dorm and it was one of my favorite purchases because of how much extra space it gave me to store items ranging from books to makeup to cute decorations.
36. Over-the-Door Organizer
Your door is a hidden gem for extra storage space. So if you find yourself strapped for storage, an over-the-door organizer will save the day! It also keeps your items super accessible (nice for grabbing things as you’re heading out).
37. Closet Hangers
Velvet hangers are the best (and this is a hill I will die on haha). Nothing is more annoying than when you nicely hang up your clean clothes only to find they slipped off of the hangers and fell onto the floor. These ones are slim, but they also work really well!
38. Fabric Bins
Fabric bins are so helpful when it comes to organizing your closet! There are bound to be some storage gaps, either in your closet or other place in your dorm, where these bins will come in handy. It’s also a lot easier to stay organized in a tight space when you have designated bins (rather than loose items everywhere).
39. Drawer Dividers
Whether it’s your dresser or your desk drawers, these drawer dividers are a game-changer for keeping everything nice and organized without having to spend any extra money on drawer inserts.
I loved using these drawer dividers for my dorm because they are adjustable so it made it super easy to use in pretty much any type of drawer or storage unit (although I used them mainly in my dresser drawers).
40. Hanging Shoe Caddy
One of my biggest worries about my dorm room was if I would have enough space to store all of the shoes I wanted to bring (I know, first world problems). But an over-the-door shoe caddy has space for literally all of the shoes you could possibly want to bring. I mean there’s room for 24 pairs of shoes (which you definitely couldn’t fit in your closet alone).
I’ve also seen people use this for storing snacks and knick knacks. Which looks kind of funny, but it’s actually really smart!
41. Space Saving Hangers
This is easily one of my favorite space-saving hacks when it comes to dorm room closets. If you think the dorm room closets aren’t too small, just wait until you start putting things in it and you will run out of space very quickly (I know I did).
It kind of turns your closet into a waterfall system – but it’s still super easy to find everything!
Dorm Comfort & Aesthetic:
42. LED or String Lights
Warm lighting is going to be your best friend in the dorms! Every dorm has a main light, but they honestly feel like hospital lights. They’re insanely bright white lights.
And I can tell you right now, you’re maybe going to turn them on once, and then never again. So any kind of warm lighting you can bring into your dorm will make it feel cozy while also giving you some ambience.
43. Photos / Wall Decor
Photos and wall decor is obviously a personal preference. But even if you just print out some photos that you already have, or go to Pinterest and print out a few aesthetic pictures, this really is a personal preference. But you’re probably going to want to put something up on your wall to make your room feel more personal.
Some dorms (like mine) also have built-in bulletin boards that covers a big portion of the wall because they don’t want you making holes in the actual wall. And if this is the case, it’s super convenient for you to hang things up, so it’s a win-win!

44. Washable Rug
A rug will make the biggest difference in how your dorm feels! I remember first moving into my dorm and it felt so cold and stale. The moment I added a rug, it felt 10x cozier and homier. Plus, no one wants to walk on the hard floors without shoes on – you just don’t.
But whatever rug you decide on, just make sure it’s washable! And I would highly advise against those soft faux fur rugs. I get it, they’re so darn cozy, but impossible to keep clean.
45. Vanity Mirror
The desk in your dorm is also your vanity so having a makeup mirror will be a life saver when it comes to having a place to get ready in the morning or do a couple of touch-ups before going out.
This vanity mirror will be your best friend when getting ready because you can see EVERYTHING in this mirror but it won’t take up too much space on your desk. Plus there are 3 different light modes if the brightest one is too harsh.
46. Throw Pillows
Decorative pillows are a great way to make your bed feel extra cozy!
This is where you can get creative decorating your college dorm and choose a color scheme for the decor in your dorm. Mixing and matching different colors and textures is such a fun way to add character and personality to your room!
Pro Tip: I wouldn’t do anything more than two decorative pillows. It’s just enough to make your bed look and feel homey, but not too much to where you can’t fit comfortably on it (don’t forget it’s a twin XL haha).

49. White Noise Machine
This is an essential for some, but probably not for everyone. But I thought it would be worth mentioning that if you have trouble falling asleep with noise around you, you’re going to want some kind of white noise machine, because the dorms will get loud. Not always, but it’s kind of unpredictable.
And of course it’s when you really need to fall asleep because you have an early morning exam that people decide to be the loudest. 🤦♀️

50. Water Filter
This is something a lot of people don’t think about until they realize there’s not a close-by spot to refill their water bottles. So don’t be one of those people who forgets this!
It’s always nice to know the water you’re drinking is clean – just once less thing to worry about. 🙂
51. Single Serve Coffee Maker
It’s so funny to see who becomes a coffee drinker in college. Because even people who normally don’t drink coffee, will start in college. If for no other reason than to help them pull an all-nighter or get them out of bed for their 8 am lecture.
But if you are a coffee drinker, you’re going to want some sort of easy-to-use coffee machine in your dorm room so you don’t have to go buy it every morning. We all know how expensive a coffee addiction can be.
52. Handheld Steamer
I could not tell you how many times I reached for this handheld steamer in college. A lot of times I wouldn’t fold my clothes right away so when I would go to wear something, more often than not it would have a few wrinkles. Even when I did fold my clothes there were still some wrinkles.
Before, when I was still living at home, I would just throw my shirt in the dryer for a couple of minutes to get the wrinkles out. But unfortunately, you don’t have that same luxury in the dorms.
So a steamer is going to save you from going out looking like your clothes were bunched up on the floor (not a fun look).
53. Rotating Fan
Dorms can get pretty hot, especially with the summer heat. If you don’t have a fan to cool you down, it can get pretty miserable, especially if you are one of those people that tend to run hot.
And some dorms just don’t have AC (which is crazy!). So the best thing you can do for yourself is find some way to get the air circulating in your room. And I know this fan looks small, but she’s mighty, and will get the job done!
54. First Aid Kit
Not exactly the most glamorous college dorm room essential, but safety comes first!
They do have nurses on campus but it’s always nice to be able to take care of minor cuts and injuries on your own, especially in a pinch. Definitely something you want to keep in your dorm room, because even if you don’t use it for yourself, one of your friends will probably need something from this kit – and it’s nice to be prepared!
